How I made this

Every message I typed into Claude Code to make this, and what Claude did after each one.

A replay of the recorded session from 6 Oct, 20:14 to 7 Oct, 15:36 UTC. It shows my 21 project messages exactly as I typed them, Claude’s visible replies, and a selection of its 492 tool calls. Claude’s private reasoning isn’t part of what’s shown.

Where it ended up: v18, reference left, Claude’s recreation right. Shape, shading and motion differences remain. Fast cuts and flashing imagery. Playback is opt-in. Watch the original reference or every version in the showcase.

Iteration 4 is pushed, and round 4 of the Sonnet 5.5 judging is running on it. After round 3 all three sections scored 6.3–6.5 out of 10, up from 4.5–5 in round 1. This pass also fixed a bug the judges caught: the white typing block on the word cards could appear before its word's start time. Other changes: - Opener: the mid-zoom now reads as chunky pixel dashes, and the 0.75s signature is redrawn as a cursive line. - 3.8–4.1s: the head reveal is a dark purple silhouette that sharpens to orange, with red contour rings only around 4.0s. - Icon ring: it rolls slightly, the hit flashes are shorter and sharper, and the heart gets its ink scribble. - Scatter: ink blobs, dots and […]

I compared the face and hand programmatically, and both are much closer now. v10 is committed and pushed, and the Sonnet site agent is publishing it. I built scripts/shape-compare.js. Shape match (1.0 = identical silhouette): | | v9 | v11 | |---|---|---| | Head @ 5.0s | 0.745 | 0.823 | | Hand @ 14.6s | 0.448 | 0.797 | | Hand @ 15.0s | — | 0.833 | I'm now checking judge suggestions against the measurement before keeping them. ⋮ 4 more steps here. Open them in the full session.
v12 is committed and pushed, and the site agent and judges have it. The main change is the hand, which I rebuilt rather than patched: - Fingers: each one is a tapered, jointed digit, thick at the base and narrowing to a rounded fingertip, with slight knuckle bulges. They grow out of the palm with smooth joins; earlier versions had dark notches and square patches there. - Lighting: each finger is shaded like a cylinder, with a soft highlight down the lit side and darker edges. There are faint knuckle creases and soft occlusion where one finger crosses another. - Palm: a fleshy bulge at the base of the thumb, a knuckle line across the top, and an edge that darkens toward the wrist […]
The opening holds at 7.0, and the judge makes a fair point: the mean colour now matches, but the reference's 3.75–4.0s head has structure (a bright core, a darker edge, contour bands) where ours is flat. It also flags the new red rim as a uniform glow outline; the reference's rim is strongest at the face and neck. The signature note I'm deliberately leaving: that's someone's handwriting, so ours stays an original scribble of similar size and style rather than a copy. Applying the structural fixes while the other two judges finish.

The earlier v16 attempt failed the same way, and its contact sheets and judge pairs were built from the stale v15 video, so I deleted them. Fix (committed): each worker now decodes only the masks for its own frames. A test peaked at about 400 MB per worker, roughly 8 GB in total instead of about 32 GB. I haven't restarted the full render, because a run stopped for memory pressure shouldn't be relaunched without your go-ahead. **What's in v1 […]

v16 is rendered, committed and pushed (commit 3015088). GitHub now matches the local checkout. What's on GitHub under media/versions/v16/: - render.mp4 (1440×1080, with the soundtrack) - sidebyside.mp4, with the original on the left and CLAUDE on the right - 9 contact sheets - 45 exact-frame pairs of original and render - meta.json Both READMEs list v16 as "not judged yet". The memory fix worked: the render finished in 24 seconds and about 13 GB of memory stayed free throughout. On the contact sheets the head, hand, heart, red camera flash and vinyl now line up closely with the original. Next I can run the three judges on v16, then continue the fix-and-render loop toward "p […]

A Sonnet agent is now rebuilding the site with v15 and v16 added. It will start the server on port 8787 and re-add the tailnet-only Tailscale rule. Then it checks every media link, as I did last time. I'll send you the link once it reports back.
The site is up. The agent's push hit a GitHub server error, so I'm retrying it and double-checking the site myself:

The site is live and up to date at http://[tailnet host]:8787/site/. It only opens from devices on your tailnet. - Versions: all 16 are listed, newest first. v15 shows its scores (6.5 / 6.0 / 5.0) and v16 shows "not judged yet". - Checks: the page loads both locally and over the tailnet. The agent checked all 189 media links and every one loads, and partial video requests work, so seeking and downloads should be fine. - Server: it serves dist/ on port 8787, process 2211934. The Tailscale rule is tailnet-only; your other Tailscale rules are unchanged. One thing didn't go through: the push to GitHub. The site rebuild changed two tracked files (site/versions.json and ` […]

On the corrected images the finale scores 7.5/10 (v15 got 5). The judge withdrew its timing complaints, and the scatter now lines up within about 3px. What's left is the scribble detail, the final lock-up tilt, the camera tilt, and the paper texture and blur. Waiting for the other two judges.

The hand and finale v17 work is merged. Its main changes: - The lock-up tilt and size are fitted to the source. - Pen marks are measured frame by frame from 19.0s. - The paper is softer. - The camera is tilted. - The book transition, which we had inverted, is fixed. The middle/sprites and opening workers are still running.

are u having subagents work on v17 now? I thought u would do all the work?

Yes. Since v15 I've split the fix work across three parallel workers, one per section (opening, middle, hand/finale). I didn't flag that change clearly enough. - Who the workers are: forks of me, the same model (Opus) carrying this whole conversation's context, not Sonnet. Each works in its own git worktree so they don't collide, and must check every change against the exact source frames. - What I do myself: I decide what gets fixed, check the judges' claims against the frames, and merge everything. I also render, archive, commit and push. I did the head work myself, including rotoscoping and the measured colour tuning. - Sonnet: only the side jobs you asked for, which are the […]
The middle/sprites worker finished while you were reading: it redrew the coin, cat, cash, plant, cap, lens and vinyl label from source crops, and fixed icon scale and the ink strokes. That work is done whichever way you choose, so I'm merging it and passing its ring measurements to the opening worker, which is still running:
⋮ 2 more steps here. Open them in the full session.
I've merged the middle/sprites branch into main, and the code loads cleanly. So two of the three v17 sections are in: hand/finale and middle with the new sprites. The opening is the only worker still running. I've sent it the ring measurements against the new sprites, which it needs for the 7.5–8.3s ring. You'd asked whether you'd prefer I do the editing myself. Which option? - Stop the opening worker now: I finish the opening list myself, then render v17. - Let it finish v17: I do all the editing alone from v18 on. - Keep the parallel workers: faster, with me reviewing and merging.

okay if it's opus still for implementation, I okay with that

Got it. Implementation stays with Opus forks and Sonnet keeps the judging and site work. I'm saving that preference so future sessions follow it:

Left out of this replay. Claude updating its own memory notes, which is unrelated to the project, 2 steps.

The preference is saved, and the opening worker keeps going. Once it's done I'll merge, render v17, archive and commit it, retry the GitHub push, and have Sonnet judge it and refresh the site.

What the replay leaves out

  • Claude’s internal reasoning. Only what it showed on screen is here.
  • Private details. Local folders, file names, machine and network addresses, and session IDs are replaced with labels in brackets.
  • Seven operational messages from me, such as status checks and stopping a local server, plus the steps they started. Each spot is marked in the replay.
  • Claude updating its own memory notes, which is unrelated to the project, and automated notices such as subagent reports. Memory steps are marked.
  • Tool output after its first line. The full session shows every call, and the command behind every shell call.
Run this repository yourself

These are instructions for the checked-in code, not prompts, a historical command transcript or a guarantee of reproducing the later v18 render. Run them from the repository root in your own checkout.

Just browse the website

A current Node.js LTS release and npm are enough. The committed media needs no model account, ffmpeg, font download or npm dependency install for this route.

Repository root, shell
npm run site:build
node scripts/serve-site.js 8787 dist

Open http://127.0.0.1:8787/site/. To deploy, copy the whole dist/ directory, including dist/media/, to static hosting. Relative links support a hosting subdirectory.

Rebuild the frames

You also need Bash, curl, ffmpeg and ffprobe (with H.264/AAC encoding and the drawtext filter for comparison scripts). Font fetching needs network access. Allow several GB of free disk space and RAM; start with two workers, or one if memory is tight.

Use source media you have permission to process. This demonstration copies the committed web reference and soundtrack into ref/. The reference is re-encoded, not the original full-resolution input, so tracing and measurements may differ. Run in a fresh checkout; these commands replace those local inputs.

Prepare inputs and derived masks
npm ci &&
bash scripts/fetch-fonts.sh &&
cp media/original/original.mp4 ref/reference.mp4 &&
cp media/original/original.mp3 ref/audio.mp3 &&
node scripts/trace-hand.js hand &&
node scripts/trace-hand.js head &&
node scripts/trace-ink.js &&
node scripts/trace-pen.js 413 431 pen soft &&
node scripts/trace-pen.js 432 487 &&
node scripts/trace-pen.js 413 431 dark &&
node scripts/trace-pen.js 487 487 dark

The fonts and generated ref/derived/ masks aren’t bundled. The trace-pen.js commands prepare the later finale’s red pen and dark brush masks. Without these inputs, fallback fonts or drawn shapes can change the result. These tracing scripts are tuned to this reference, not arbitrary videos.

Render and verify a preview
node src/render.js --workers 2 --out out/preview.mp4 &&
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -count_frames \
  -show_entries stream=width,height,nb_read_frames \
  -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 out/preview.mp4 &&
bash scripts/sidebyside.sh out/preview.mp4 out/sidebyside.mp4

Verify success and a fresh, full-length output. Renders share out/segments/ and reuse filenames: don’t run two at once, and archive an accepted version before the next pass.

For an optional full-resolution export with motion blur:

node src/render.js --scale 2 --samples 4 --workers 2 --out out/final.mp4

Check one exact frame before changing timing

At this frame rate, zero-based frame 120 is at 120 × 1001 / 24000 = 5.005 s. Extract that source frame and render that time separately, avoiding timestamp-based pairing of two running streams.

Reference left, recreation right, frame 120
node src/render.js --stills 5.005 &&
ffmpeg -v error -y -i ref/reference.mp4 \
  -vf "select='eq(n,120)',scale=1440:1080" \
  -frames:v 1 out/reference-120.png &&
ffmpeg -v error -y -i out/reference-120.png \
  -i out/stills/r_5.005.png -filter_complex hstack \
  -frames:v 1 out/pair-120.png

Open out/pair-120.png. Repeat at cuts and disputed frames. This assumes both timelines start at the same source frame; verify that when adapting the process. A still checks shape and placement, not the whole motion.

About this record

Rebuilt from a read-only snapshot of the project’s Claude Code session, which ends on while v17 was in progress. Its committed archive checkpoint was v1–v16, not a finished v17. My messages are quoted exactly, typos included, with only a local folder redacted. Claude’s replies are quoted as they appeared on screen, cut with […] when very long. Tool calls show the start of their real input and the first line of output.

The condensed replay keeps, for each of my messages, Claude’s first and last visible reply, up to two more between them, every question it asked me, every subagent it launched, the first new script it wrote and the last commit. Everything else is a counted gap that links to the full session.

The video and the final still come from the later v18 archive, whose metadata identifies render commit fda013a. They match this pinned archive revision byte for byte, and do not extend the prompt snapshot or imply that it contains the v18 instructions. The earlier hand stills are single frames from the archived v1, v8, v10 and v14 side-by-side videos.

The raw transcript, private paths, session identifiers, unrelated conversation and internal reasoning aren’t published. The code and commands are there to try, but neither bit-for-bit reproduction nor a perfect visual match is promised.
